Scout was the inspiration for the program. He was not supposed to be a rescue. In an effort to find an affordable "been there, done that" horse Mary Strong opened the search up to the entire county! She fell in love with pictures and video of Scout and sent for him sight-unseen. When he arrived and got off the rig, the gasp could be heard in Santa Rosa. Malnourished and full of fungus, he was at death's door. The vet came out immediately and we started a daily program to get him healthy. He had daily baths, medication to take, and lots and lots of hay. Watching him grow and transform into the beauty he is today opened our eyes to the good we could do for other horses. Mary is a nurse, and nursing him back to health made her spring out of bed each morning. He lives here at Strong Stables and is a proud member of the Strong Stables herd.
A call came in to Mary one day, a plea for help. A lovely women got wind that the horse she had sold had fallen apart rather quickly. She was able to talk the person into surrendering Mikey. Mary and Phoebe Harper made the 5 hour drive to get Mikey. When we arrived, he looked thin and had no energy. He was not the horse that had been described to us. We were not even sure he could stand the entire journey back to Petaluma. We got Dr. Amber Johnson and our farrier out immediately to come up with a plan. After many weeks of feeding (lots and lots of feeding), farrier work, and TLC, Mikey returned to his old self and was adopted by a wonderful local family to be used as a light dressage horse. We are grateful he is staying at Strong Stables so we may continue to watch him flourish. He is a lucky horse to be adopted by a fabulous family who are providing the care and support he needs to be all he can be! See more "after shots" of Mikey in the barn photos page.
